ABSTRACT

Recently, crowd counting has attracted significant attention, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to its ability to automatically provide accurate crowd numbers in images. To address the challenges of location-level labeling, several transformer-based crowd counting methods have been proposed with only count-level supervision. However, these methods directly use the transformer as an encoder without considering the uneven crowd distribution. To address this issue, we propose CCTwins, a novel transformer-based crowd counting method with only count-level supervision. Specifically, we introduce an adaptive scene consistency attention mechanism to enhance the transformer-based model Twins-SVT-L for feature extraction in crowded scenes. Additionally, we design a multi-level weakly-supervised loss function that generates estimated crowd numbers in a coarse-to-fine manner, making it more appropriate for weakly-supervised settings. Moreover, intermediate features supervised by count-level labels are utilized to fuse multi-scale features. Experimental results on four public datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly-supervised methods, achieving up to a 16.6% improvement in MAE and up to a 13.8% improvement in RMSE across all evaluation settings. Moreover, the proposed CCTwins obtains competitive counting performance, even when compared to the state-of-the-art fully-supervised methods. IEEE

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the effect of sports regulation on the psychological state of English students. The author administered the experimental method and SCL-90 symptom assessment to 461 students in a regional normal school. By gathering data from students at various stages of the experiment, psychological trends and emotional shifts were identified promptly to improve experimental outcomes. The questionnaire data and test results were processed and analyzed using SPSS and other statistical software. The study results indicate that the sports intervention is viable and effective in boosting pupils' mental health. To effectively protect students' physical and mental health development, colleges and universities should strengthen the publicity and construction work in this area, let students realize the true significance of sports, and encourage students to engage in sports and form healthy sports habits actively. In addition, it provides techniques and recommendations for enhancing mental health education to enhance the mental health of students at this school effectively.

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims The COVID-19 pandemic posed unique challenges for people worldwide in self-caring for their rheumatoid arthritis (RA). COVID-19 also prompted global changes in public health (e.g., vaccination programs and mask wearing) and rheumatology services (e.g., integrating telehealth with in-person healthcare). To facilitate cross-country learning of how to support people with RA to self-care during and post-pandemic, better understanding of individuals' experiences of self-care in the context of changes in public health and 'integrated' healthcare is needed. Our study aimed to explore transferability in experiences of public health measures and telehealth during COVID- 19 among individuals with RA in Canada and the UK. Methods Between July and October 2022, online focus groups (90 mins) took place with participants living with RA in the UK. Participants were recruited via social media and professional networks (including Versus Arthritis). Each participant received a report >=7days before each focus group, with a request to review in advance. The report contained preliminary findings identified through reflexive thematic analysis of interviews (30-70 mins) with thirty-nine participants with RA in British Columbia, Canada (26-86 years;36 females) between December 2020 and 2021. Nine preliminary themes were identified across three topics: accessing telehealth and in-person healthcare;decision-making around COVID-19 vaccinations and public health measures;and renegotiating 'the self'. The themes guided the focus groups, wherein UK participants shared their perspectives on each theme arising in the Canadian context. Audio-visual recordings were transcribed verbatim, and transcripts were de-identified. Ongoing directed content analysis of focus group data involves a collaborative approach with patient partners. Results Four focus groups involving thirteen participants (44-81 years;11 females) living across the UK were conducted. Participants had lived with RA for between 3-36 years. Canadian experiences typically resonated with UK participants, with some feeling a sense of unity and sadness that challenges were also experienced by others living with RA beyond their national context. Many UK participants supported preferences expressed by Canadian participants for a 'hybrid' healthcare approach to maximise benefits and minimise downsides of telehealth, and in-person consultations post-pandemic. Benefits (e.g., avoiding risk of COVID-19 transmission with telehealth) and disadvantages (e.g., lacking sensitivity/accuracy of in-person assessments) described by Canadian participants also resonated with UKbased participants. Many described how their decision-making on adopting public health measures to maintain their self-care was supported and/or undermined in their local context/community. Conclusion Our findings offer novel insights into the challenges and opportunities experienced by people with RA in their decision-making around public health measures and telehealth during a global pandemic. They also demonstrate some transferability of experiences between the UK and Canada. Insights may serve to inform decision-making for policy and programmes to support self-care (e.g., by integrating telehealth into routine rheumatology practice) across countries during and postpandemic.

ABSTRACT

Traffic flow affects the transmission and distribution of pathogens. The large-scale traffic flow that emerges with the rapid development of global economic integration plays a significant role in the epidemic spread. In order to more accurately indicate the time characteristics of the traffic-driven epidemic spread, new parameters are added to represent the change of the infection rate parameter over time on the traffic-driven Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic spread model. Based on the collected epidemic data in Hebei Province, a linear regression method is performed to estimate the infection rate parameter and an improved traffic-driven SIR epidemic spread dynamics model is established. The impact of different link-closure rules, traffic flow and average degree on the epidemic spread is studied. The maximum instantaneous number of infected nodes and the maximum number of ever infected nodes are obtained through simulation. Compared to the simulation results of the links being closed between large-degree nodes, closing the links between small-degree nodes can effectively inhibit the epidemic spread. In addition, reducing traffic flow and increasing the average degree of the network can also slow the epidemic outbreak. The study provides the practical scientific basis for epidemic prevention departments to conduct traffic control during epidemic outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

Epidemics and their resulting pandemics have become essential factors influencing economic development, financial stability, poverty, and ultimately a country's innovation level, including green technology innovation. This research thus investigates epidemic events' correlation to green innovation by operating with skewed panel data involving 134 countries from 1971 to 2018 and provides compelling proof that Epidemics have a detrimental effect on green innovation, not only for the current year but also for the next six years. We also show that the quality of institutions and financial development levels weaken epidemics' detrimental effects on green innovation. Overall, the findings would draw particular attention from policymakers.

ABSTRACT

Here, we report the development of an indirect ELISA antibodies detection method for African swine fever virus (ASFV). Two purified monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against ASFV p30 and p54 protein were used as targets and a phage-displayed 12-mer peptide library was used to conduct four rounds of biopanning to screen peptide epitopes, then amino acids GGG was used as a linker to synthesize tandem-epitope peptide of ASFV p30 and p54 protein which was used as coating antigen. The optimum reaction conditions of indirect ELISA were determined by chessboard titration, and clinical serum samples were used to evaluate the specificity, sensitivity, stability and conformity of this method. The biopanning experiment indicated that 146PAEPYTT152 was a core domain of the B cell linear epitope of p54 protein. The optimization results of ELISA reaction conditions showed that the tandem-epitope peptide coupled with ovalbumin (OVA) at N-terminal had low background of non-specific serum reaction. And the optimum reaction effect was obtained when the polypeptide antigen was coated with carbonate buffer in 2 mug.mL-1, the serum was diluted 100-fold with blocking solution (1% gelatin solution), and the HRP-antibody was diluted 5 000 times with 0.05% PBST solution. The cut-off value was determined to be 0.339. Furthermore, the results of specificity, sensitivity and stability tests showed that there is no cross-reaction in positive serum samples of classical swine fever virus (CSFV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), porcine parvovirus (PPV) and porcine pseudorabies virus (PRV), the detection limit of ASFV positive sera is 1:1 600, and the method had high repeatability. Finally, Total 320 swine serum samples were detected simultaneously by the present established method and commercial ASFV antibody detection kit. The results showed that the relative specificity and sensitivity of the two methods were 97.6% and 97.3%, respectively. And the coincidence rate was 97.5%. In conclusion, this method showed good specificity, sensitivity, repeatability and coincidence rate, that had the potential value of developing clinical diagnostic kit.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board, Institute of Animal Science of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has posed a serious threat to international public health. The SARS-COV-2 gene continues to mutate in COVID-19 outbreaks. Mutation mainly manifests in 3 forms: point mutation, gene recombination and epigenetic modification. Viral mutations are driven by multiple factors, with mutation rates modulated at 3 levels, the nature of virus, host-virus interactions and natural selection. Therefore, it is particularly important to strengthen the monitoring of the global novel coronavirus genome and the protection of immunosuppressed populations. In the early stage of virus evolution, the mutant strains exhibit greater transmissibility and less virulence than the wild-type strain, although 5 variants of concern (VOCs) showed different stability, transmission capacity, adaptability and pathogenicity. So physical interventions need to be further strengthened. As herd immunity is established, novel mutant strains tend to mutate against vaccines and antibodies. In that case, VOCs, especially the prevailing Omicron variant, bring challenges to the prevention and control of COVID-19 worldwide. The existing and potential prevention, diagnosis and treatment approaches for COVID-19 were summarized. In the vaccination part, the protective efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine against VOCs and the factors influencing the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine were analyzed. In the detection part, the detection methods based on nucleic acid, antigen and antibody were summarized in order to satisfy the requirements for point-of-care testing and timely recognition of novel variants. And in the treatment part, the potential therapeutic drugs and targets of SARS-CoV-2 were summarized. Drug targets are generally divided into extracellular targets and intracellular targets. In general, this review proposes possible countermeasures by analyzing the impact of mutations on global epidemic prevention and control, hoping to provide theoretical basis for possible large-scale epidemic prevention and control in the future. © 2022 Institute of Biophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences. ABSTRACT

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strong demand for pharyngeal swab sampling and nucleic acid testing. Research has shown that the positive rate of nasopharyngeal swabs is higher than that of oropharyngeal swabs. However, because of the high complexity and visual obscuring of the interior nasal cavity, it is impossible to obtain the sampling path information directly from the conventional imaging principle. Through the combination of anatomical geometry and spatial visual features, in this paper, we present a new approach to generate nasopharyngeal swabs sampling path. Firstly, this paper adopts an RGB-D camera to identify and locate the subject's facial landmarks. Secondly, the mid-sagittal plane of the subject's head is fitted according to these landmarks. At last, the path of the nasopharyngeal swab movement in the nasal cavity is determined by anatomical geometry features of the nose. In order to verify the validity of the method, the location accuracy of the facial landmarks and the fitting accuracy of mid-sagittal plane of the head are verified. Experiments demonstrate that this method provides a feasible solution with high efficiency, safety and accuracy. Besides, it can solve the problem that the nasopharyngeal robot cannot generate path based on traditional imaging principles. It also provides a key method for automatic and intelligent sampling of nasopharyngeal swabs, and it is of great clinical value to reduce the risk of cross-infection. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Many academic conferences have been cancelled or changed to be held online. The epidemic has greatly accelerated the popularization of online transmission of minimally invasive surgery. However, there are some differentiation and differences in disease spectrum, surgical technology, minimally invasive technology, surgical equipment and instruments at home and abroad. In the new era, the application of three-dimensional and 4K laparoscope brings a new perspective to minimally invasive surgery, so as to promote the development of surgery in the direction of accurate anatomy and functional protection. X-ray imaging is an important method for the diagnosis of corona virus disease(COVID-19), but there is a risk of nosocomial infection during X-ray imaging and diagnosis. By analyzing the process of X-ray imaging & diagnosis and the possible exposure factors in hospital, Jiangsu province took the lead in issuing the guideline for the nosocomial infection prevention and control of COVID-19 during X-ray imaging and diagnosis. This guideline clarifies the basic requirements for controlling infections during X-ray imaging and diagnosis, the specific measures for staff protection, disinfection of personnel and sites, and the protection and disinfection of subjects, which is instructive for on-site work. It is worth noting that while focusing on controlling infections, the principle of optimal protection for medical exposure cannot be ignored.Copyright © 2020 by the Chinese Medical Association.

ABSTRACT

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are commonly used in a variety of consumer and commercial products, typically as a component of disinfectants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, QACs became one of the primary agents utilized to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus on surfaces. However, the ecotoxicological effects of QACs upon aquatic organisms have not been fully assessed. In this study, we examined the effects of a widely used QAC (benzalkonium chloride-C14, BAC-14) on two toxigenic Microcystis strains and one non-toxigenic freshwater Microcystis strain and carried out an analysis focused on primary, adaptive and compensatory stress responses at apical (growth and photosynthesis) and metabolic levels. This analysis revealed that the two toxic Microcystis strains were more tolerant than the non-toxic strain, with 96 hr-EC50 values of 0.70, 0.76, and 0.38 mg/L BAC-14 for toxigenic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905, toxigenic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469, and non-toxigenic M. wesenbergii FACHB-908, respectively. The photosynthetic activities of the Microcystis, assessed via Fv/Fm values, were significantly suppressed under 0.4 mg/L BAC-14. Furthermore, this analysis revealed that BAC-14 altered 14, 12, and 8 metabolic pathways in M. aeruginosa FACHB-905, M. aeruginosa FACHB-469, and M. wesenbergii FACHB-908, respectively. It is noteworthy that BAC-14 enhanced the level of extracellular microcystin production in the toxigenic Microcystis strains, although cell growth was not significantly affected. Collectively, these data show that BAC-14 disrupted the physiological and metabolic status of Microcystis cells and stimulated the production and release of microcystin, which could result in damage to aquatic systems. © 2022

ABSTRACT

With the extensive implementation of the strong public health interventions in China, many models proposed to predict COVID-19 epidemic are no longer applicable to the current epidemic development. In this paper, a COVID-19 prediction method is proposed based on a staging SEITR model with consideration of strong public health interventions in China. The method simulates preventive and control measures such as mass nucleic acid testing and quarantine of close contacts by introducing the role of Isolates and the transformation of Exposed to Isolated. The experimental evaluation uses real epidemic data from six cities including Nanjing, Yangzhou, and etc. The accuracy of prediction for total number of infections reaches 95.8% with the data of the first 15 days of the outbreak. In addition, the prediction accuracy of the end of the pandemic is 95.07%. These show that the proposed method can effectively predict the course of the epidemic and it is practical for relevant departments to formulate reasonable prevention and control measures. © 2022 IEEE.

Humans are facing an unprecedented historical crisis and challenge. To identify the strategies that we can use to cope with historical crisis and challenge, we should investigate two well-studied strategies: "slow strategy, ” which is essentially an investment in the future, and "fast strategy” or "live fast, die young.” According to "The Ant and the Grasshopper, ” Aesop's fable, which is under the pretext of intertemporal choice of social insects, the "slow” rather than the "fast” strategy is recommended for those who want to survive the environmental crisis. Intertemporal choice requires tradeoffs among outcomes whose effects occur at different times. In the commonly accepted language of intertemporal choice, the Ant, whose choice is the "larger but later” (LL) option, is more likely to survive the harsh winter than the Grasshopper, whose choice is the "smaller but sooner” (SS) option. To determine the optimal intertemporal choice strategy that can help us to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, we included 26, 355 participants from 18 Asian, African, European, American, and Oceanian countries in the present study. We investigated the participants' preferences in intertemporal choice with double-dated mixed outcomes, evaluated the degree of change in their intertemporal choice by differentiating the common currency in peacetime and epidemic time (i.e., two kinds of change indicators used for differentiating currencies and stages, respectively). We then asked them to rate their self-rated surviving achievement in the fight against COVID-19. Considering that individuals' surviving achievements were affected by individual-and religious-level factors, we analyzed all data by using multilevel linear analysis to reflect the data's hierarchical structure. After considering individual differences in personal factors and religious factors, we constructed two-level models to explore the effects of the change in intertemporal choice on self-rated surviving achievement, and measured the moderating role of cultural orientation in terms of Hofstede's six culture dimensions. The findings of the cross-national survey revealed that Change Indicator 1 (∆ currency) and Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) of Chinese/Singaporeans could jointly predict their self-rated surviving achievement. Meanwhile, only Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) alone could predict the self-rated surviving achievement of people in the cultural circle that included the India, Malaysia, Philippines, and Nigeria. Neither Change Indicator 1 (∆ currency) nor Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) of the people in other cultures could significantly predict their self-rated surviving achievement. On the basis of the gist of The Book of Change and the resulting findings, we suggested that 1) how you differentially (flexibly) made an intertemporal choice in peacetime and epidemic time would reflect the extent to which you would survive the war against COVID-19. In addition, 2) the mindset of change might shape the competitive advantage of a nation, such as China, in response to the historical crisis. The closer the cultural distance of a country or nation from China, the greater the possibility of benefitting from a similar competitive advantage. Bacterial drug resistance has become a global public health threat, among which the infection of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) is one of the top noticeable issues in the global anti-infection area due to limited therapy options. In recent years, the prevalence of CRE transmission around the world has increased, and the transmission of COVID-19 has intensified the situation to a certain extent. CRE resistance can be induced by carbapenemase, porin, efflux pump, penicillin-binding protein alteration, and biofilm production. Deletion, mutation, insertion, and post-transcriptional modification of corresponding coding genes may affect the sensitivity of Enterobacterales bacteria to carbapenems. Clinical and laboratory methods to detect CRE and explore its resistance mechanisms are being developed. Due to the limited options of antibiotics, the clinical treatment of CRE infection also faces severe challenges. The clinical therapies of CRE include single or combined use of antibiotics, and some new antibiotics and treatment methods are also being developed. Hence, this review summarizes the epidemiology, resistance mechanisms, screening and clinical treatments of CRE infection, to provide references for clinical prevention, control and treatment of CRE infection. © 2022 Elsevier GmbH

In the vaccination part, the protective efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine against VOCs and the factors influencing the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine were analyzed. In the detection part, the detection methods based on nucleic acid, antigen and antibody were summarized in order to satisfy the requirements for point-of-care testing and timely recognition of novel variants. And in the treatment part, the potential therapeutic drugs and targets of SARS-CoV-2 were summarized. Drug targets are generally divided into extracellular targets and intracellular targets. In general, this review proposes possible countermeasures by analyzing the impact of mutations on global epidemic prevention and control, hoping to provide theoretical basis for possible large-scale epidemic prevention and control in the future.

ABSTRACT

It is significant to accurately predict the epidemic trend of COVID-19 due to its detrimental impact on the global health and economy. Although machine learning-based approaches have been applied to predict epidemic trend, standard models have shown low accuracy for long-term prediction due to a high level of uncertainty and lack of essential training data. This paper proposes an improved machine learning framework employing generative adversarial network (GAN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) for adversarial training to forecast the potential threat of COVID-19 in countries where COVID-19 is rapidly spreading. It also investigates the most updated COVID-19 epidemiological data before October 18, 2020 and models the epidemic trend as time series that can be fed into the proposed model for data augmentation and trend prediction of the epidemic. The model is trained to predict daily numbers of cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Italy, USA, China, Germany, UK, and across the world. The paper further analyzes and suggests which populations are at risk of contracting COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Humans are facing an unprecedented historical crisis and challenge. To identify the strategies that we can use to cope with historical crisis and challenge, we should investigate two well-studied strategies: "slow strategy, ” which is essentially an investment in the future, and "fast strategy” or "live fast, die young.” According to "The Ant and the Grasshopper, ” Aesop's fable, which is under the pretext of intertemporal choice of social insects, the "slow” rather than the "fast” strategy is recommended for those who want to survive the environmental crisis. Intertemporal choice requires tradeoffs among outcomes whose effects occur at different times. In the commonly accepted language of intertemporal choice, the Ant, whose choice is the "larger but later” (LL) option, is more likely to survive the harsh winter than the Grasshopper, whose choice is the "smaller but sooner” (SS) option. To determine the optimal intertemporal choice strategy that can help us to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, we included 26, 355 participants from 18 Asian, African, European, American, and Oceanian countries in the present study. We investigated the participants' preferences in intertemporal choice with double-dated mixed outcomes, evaluated the degree of change in their intertemporal choice by differentiating the common currency in peacetime and epidemic time (i.e., two kinds of change indicators used for differentiating currencies and stages, respectively). We then asked them to rate their self-rated surviving achievement in the fight against COVID-19. Considering that individuals' surviving achievements were affected by individual-and religious-level factors, we analyzed all data by using multilevel linear analysis to reflect the data's hierarchical structure. After considering individual differences in personal factors and religious factors, we constructed two-level models to explore the effects of the change in intertemporal choice on self-rated surviving achievement, and measured the moderating role of cultural orientation in terms of Hofstede's six culture dimensions. The findings of the cross-national survey revealed that Change Indicator 1 (∆ currency) and Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) of Chinese/Singaporeans could jointly predict their self-rated surviving achievement. Meanwhile, only Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) alone could predict the self-rated surviving achievement of people in the cultural circle that included the India, Malaysia, Philippines, and Nigeria. Neither Change Indicator 1 (∆ currency) nor Change Indicator 2 (∆ stage) of the people in other cultures could significantly predict their self-rated surviving achievement. On the basis of the gist of The Book of Change and the resulting findings, we suggested that 1) how you differentially (flexibly) made an intertemporal choice in peacetime and epidemic time would reflect the extent to which you would survive the war against COVID-19. In addition, 2) the mindset of change might shape the competitive advantage of a nation, such as China, in response to the historical crisis. The closer the cultural distance of a country or nation from China, the greater the possibility of benefitting from a similar competitive advantage.
